Description:

New tools and techniques are emerging and they are aimed at automatically converting unstructured visual data—pictures—into the proverbial 1,000 words, and more. By turning that raw data into objective statements of fact, such as progress assessments of output in the workplace, or quality assurance checks for defects, scientists and forward-leaning practitioners hope not only to improve the speed and quality of construction, but pay cycles as well. Most of the technology, readily available through the cloud, may already be at hand in your cell phone and 3D project designs; what’s lacking may simply come down to defining a process and acquiring some software. In this webcast, we talk to researchers and early adopters in the construction industry to find out whether or not that is the case.

Learning Objectives:
  • Recount how a TxDOT pilot study of a camera-based iPhone app was designed to manage stockpile inventory quickly, safely measure aggregates inventory, and generate accurate data consistent with results gathered via high-cost, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) surveys. 
  • Explore methods for building a business case supporting the adoption and deployment of mobile apps in the field to eliminate inventory uncertainty, reduce job costs, lower safety risks, and increase confidence in the accuracy of data collection practices. 
  • Summarize the issues facing the construction industry as growing workplace complexity accelerates the need for collaborative digital technologies, like Procore, to eliminate dated and expensive multi-layer paper processes. 
  • Describe how camera-based cloud apps are transforming workplace efficiency and replacing traditional, paper-based workflows with powerful, trackable, and digital content.
