Description:

In recent years, there have been many contrasting uses of the terms resilience and sustainability. Some use resilience and sustainability interchangeably, others refer to these terms as complementary, while others argue that they are entirely different and independent. In theory, sustainable systems should be resilient while resilient systems may or may not be sustainable.

This session will frame the topics of resilience and sustainability within the framework of the built environment exposed to natural hazards. We will discuss synergies, differences, conflicts, and the need for both a resilient and sustainable future, sharing real-world examples. Ricardo A. Medina and Monika Serrano will provide insight on when, how, and why the resilience and sustainability balance scale may tip one way or another.

Join us for this critical discussion as vulnerabilities of our built environment to slowly changing conditions and disruptive events have demonstrated the need for incorporation of more resilient and sustainable practices.
